Is the doctor in? In this new medical age of urgent care centers and retail clinics, that’s not a simple question.https://nyti.ms/2qfcdEh

Ironic! Twenty-five years ago a major study in the USA indicated that there were too many medical students, foreign medical grads and doctors in general. Med schools cut enrollment back and now here we are. But don’t worry the baby boomers should expire by 2045. 🤧

Well if Doctors spent more than 5 mins talking to their patients, maybe they'd be more willing to go see them. I recently switched doctors for this very reason. My new doc is amazing! We only use Urgent Care for after hours, non-ER type of issues.

I recently discovered that if you actually pass out in the lobby of Urgent Care, they will deem that you are more Urgent than others, and will see you right away. It also helps if you vomit and can’t speak clearly, but that part may not be necessary.

These clinics, like Urgent Care facilities fill voids for many non-threatening health issues but they do not replace trained MD's seeing regular patients for their overall health. Insurers are driving the expansion of these drug store clinics. US needs single payer system!

Medical partnerships with these groups help broaden access to care, but depending on the dx, they cannot offer the complex treatment pts need and end up as a referral service to high-demand specialties.

How in the world did this article barely address the lack of continuity of care needed for optimal health care (in 1-2 sentences at end of article?). Good luck with that in UCC. Also, profit motives seem to underly the proliferation of VC. Who gets it? Not the providers

Continuity of care-fine! Responsibility of self-care not the American way. Medicine has been commercialized. Why are surprised by the lack of service. Money buys service. That’s the America’s way.🤧

Absolutely medical care has been commercialized (like all other American business). Article really didn’t address care for chronic illness or even maintenance. UCC are really for urgent issues to replace ER costs and waits. Not intended to replace primary care IMO
