I would have, in addition to their assignments, made then restore the school house which would have connected them to the community they damaged directly.

They could then incorporate more fully the effect their actions had a n the community they impacted and relate it comparatively to the content of their readings.

When the goal is rehabilitation, every one wins. The kids grow up to be better people and perhaps spread what they learned.

Good idea as a sentence, but the crime flowed from how poorly history, esp US history, is taught. Whitewashing and the narrative of American exceptionalism hides US crimes and makes American kids think “It can’t happen here.” Current events show how dangerous is this blindness.

        1. It's you're. 2. Highlighting a gentle though hopefully effectual "sentence" from the position of a black male who has spent a lifetime as part of a group who have had extreme sentences and incarceration rates handed to them warrants compassion and understanding.

It is satisfying to grammatically correct someone. I would agree. I don't subscribe to victimization defenses (the put upon defense) as it tends to predetermine failure, including your ability to overcome, prosper and succeed. Give it a try. What make you think I am not black?

Bravo to the judicial officials involved. Hopefully the teenagers involved have all learnt valuable lessons from this but even if they haven't this is a better option than chucking them into juvenile detention.

Read books? 👎 Why were they not required to help perform repairs, spend time in juvenile detention, and read books also. In addition the parents and/or guardians should have been required to pay all damage costs!
