A Virginia judge ordered teenage vandals to read books. But not just any book. They had to choose from a list of ones covering some of history’s most divisive and tragic periods.https://nyti.ms/2GxRXZk

When a child does something wrong take the opportunity to teach them why it was wrong. Don't simply punish. Teaching understanding will develop better citizens. Teaching only consequences will make them more creative at doing wrong.

I love some of the more positive sentences some judges are using.

That's great. Literature is powerful. I hope most of the youth got something out of the books they chose.

Interesting judgement as the sentence will act as an opportunity for those kids to expand their minds

Kudos to the judge - for using judgment. Thinking ahead. Indeed, this judge realized that the correctional system is about correction - not strictly punishment per se. This assignment may have corrected a huge gaping hole in these kids' awareness. Punishment? Help with repairs.

This wasn't a punishment. It was an opportunity to learn and I am glad the judge did this. These kids are pretty far removed from the events in the books the judge selected. They needed to learn about them & understand the impact of their actions.
