One dairy farmer shot all 51 of his milking cows and then turned the gun on himself. The dairy industry across the U.S. is in the grip of an economic crisis, fueled by decreasing demand as customers turn to milk alternatives.https://nyti.ms/2GuE2mP

The dairy industry needs to SWITCH to plant milk production, then.

This is about corporate megafarms, not almond milk. This is about GOP letting the Dean Foods and Danones of the world write ag policy, not non dairy creamer. This is about Koch Brothers funding stooges like Walker. This is about rural Americans unwilling to adapt to change.

My stepfather is a farmer. He used to raise hogs but got out of that when the megacorporations made it not profitable. Fortunately, he had a lot of land for grain. It was a time when biofuels were on the rise, so he got good prices for corn that offset the loss of hogs.

Clever and a great use of the land. How many can go that way. Creative solutions.

Most farmers have options to adapt to changing times, but not all do. Being a farmer is being the ultimate entrepreneur and you have to understand that you may have to pivot to save your business.

Wasn't aware that dairy farmers are unionized. My dad had 41 diary cows, 40 Holsteins and one Jersey, but that was a long time ago. As a solo operator, he managed by himself for about two years before selling the cows and diversifying. #Kentucky

That's in Canada. In the US there is no union. There's a for profit cooperative, but it's more like a lobby org than a union. It's dominated by large corporations like Kraft and Borden.

1 they should’ve saw this coming, it’s their own fault for not properly preparing and 2 they don’t treat those cows humanely for most part so I extra don’t feel bad.

Have you ever visited a dairy farm? Only healthy well cared for cows produce lots of milk .... which is what farms get paid to produce. An abusive farmer is 1 of very few. Just like abusive parents.

I've been on many diary farms and I've seen dead cows in piles, bloated and in the pasture with the live ones, I've seen the cows be beat and shoved to the point they trip and fall... I ask you now, ever new to factory farm? Please.

Your statement doesn't say anything about the industry, just about you. My cats are very well taken care of, even spoiled. Does that mean I've not seen them beat and kicked and throw across the street and the way some come into a shelter?

Bottom line is cows don’t have that choice, so good for you for treating them well just so you can get more milk. Fortunately for the cows, people are drinking less of it. Figure it out. Grow almonds or something

Almonds don’t grow in Wisconsin. It’s a $43 billion industry in the state and majority of our milk goes to making cheese which is widely consumed.
