Please don't say they walked off the job. KY teachers took sick days, which are part of their compensation. Because there are not enough subs, school was cancelled. They're doing this to fight budget cuts to public ed. Tone is everything--Watch your headlines, please.

Would love to see poor rural & poor urban educators stand together & say “our kids deserve better.”
-
I would love it if we stood with them.
-
Amen! Surely we as a nation can raise the bar on our standards of public education.

Over 75% of districts in KY are on spring break. Teachers did not strike today. They gave up a day that they were scheduled to be off. The others had school boards agree to use today like a snow day. Teachers will work this day later to fulfill their contract.

I guess giving tax cuts to the mega wealthy didn’t really translate into larger salaries for working people. Go figure.

Good!! I hope they get everything they are asking for. Teachers are underpaid and overworked.

Teachers have one of the most important jobs in this country and continue to be the most unappreciated, underpaid employees. How else can they fight for their salary, benefits, etc? It may not seem fair to children now, but they'll benefit from well-paid, well-qualified educators

The average teacher makes $58,000 a year and have summers off. The average worker in the U.S. would live that deal.
-
First of all, "summers off" are unpaid and only a few weeks long. They have to get a BA, credentialing and lots of training. It is a 50+hr/week job with high pressure & stress. 58k is a bargain.
-
First off, my dad was a teacher for iver 30 years, second off you are a liar.
-
What part
-
Summer is "a few weeks" - 50+ hour work weeks. High pressure? one out of five don't even graduate and I don't see anyone getting fired for that shit result.
-
wow. Yeah summer is a few weeks and I work way more than 50 hours a week.
-
So when I went to spend the summers with my dad he must have been skipping the whole month of June and 3 out of the four weeks in August? Lets not forget winter break, spring break. Every other Monday off for a stupid federal holiday...
