This reminds me of the publishing industry.

For the premium tier Spotify paid out $0.00066481 per stream in mechanicals. In this scenario, artists would earn $100 after 150,419 streams. From Digital Music News May, 2017. Spotify expects to lose $140 million.

I used to buy an album every week for about $10, vynyl version in the 70s - 80s, then had to buy the cd version again in the 90s - 00s, this time for about $20. Now a monthly $10 on Spotify gets me millions of songs. The music industry used to fleece us.

Get on over to Bandcamp instead. A bit more effort but much better for artists as I understand it:https://bandcamp.com

If the artist is signed to a label, that’s riches. Try representing DIY artists that get at most .01 cent

Well done Spotify. If artists want more they should negotiate better. If their work is only worth $0.18 than that’s fine. Record labels should make the majority share as they are taking the risk in the artist.

Curious about your thoughts
@hilljam -
My thoughts are a) that Spotify is drowning thousands upon thousands of independent artists and b) that, consequently, I look forward to their inevitable demise, and may they rot in hell, the bastards.
