“..there was one automotive fatality for every 86 million miles across all vehicles in the United States, compared with one fatality for every 320 million miles in vehicles equipped with Autopilot.” This incident is tragic but saying it raises questions about safety is ridiculous

People won't think logically,, it needs to be close to perfect, everyone thinks they can do better, as individuals, than the average." I am not going to give up control + my superior ability to a machine that outperforms the aggregate." think the shittiest/best driver in unison.

As a Tesla owner, we're advised and warned to keep hands on the wheel even when autopilot is turned on. It's still in beta. If your hands are off the wheel too long a warning comes on. Sad to hear this news but the driver has some responsibility here.

Not a native speaker so I'm guessing he spends a lot of time using a dictionary.

It isn’t “self-driving” in the way this headline is implying. It’s driving assistance. It isn’t meant to completely control the car so the driver can have a snooze. Tesla makes it very clear that drivers need to actively pay attention and have their hands on the wheel.

A self driving car is a bad idea on all levels. Vehicles were meant to be driven by humans.
-
Every so called self-driving vehicle, that’s sold to the public, requires a human driver to be attentive 100% of the time.

Constant attacks on Tesla have surprisingly been tracked back to petrol company’s?? Even BBC got in on act , found to have completely fabricated story about Tesla car being unreliable?? But they are backed by shell???

People treat autopilot as they they have to do nothing during driving and leave all control to machine , remember autopilot technology is still learning and they should keep their hands on steering wheel

Problem is they are rushing the technology because all they want is start making profits disregarding safety that happens when their iq is $$$
-
Nope. The driver didn't do what the driver was supposed to do. Read the article.
-
Already read it it is more easy to blame the computer that way the driver gets covered

Autopilot is a DRIVER ASSIST. It’s like super-fancy cruise control. It is NOT self-driving. Misleading posts like this only serve to harm the industry, since we know that most people never bother reading the article. Do better.
-
The car is literally driving itself, making decisions about starts, stops, etc.. what exactly are we missing?
-
Not exactly. It can self park (many cars have this feature) lane switch/correct and react to changes in speed (again, not unique features) but it still needs a person in the driver’s seat. At the moment, it enhances HUMANS driving, increasing safety. Doesn’t replace people.
-
The car that hit the lady in Arizona was in self driving mode as I understand it. In any case, turning over decision making to a computer that has no reason to fear a fatal crash is beyond problematic to me.
-
1/ The one in Arizona WAS self driving, but the authorities have indicated that it wasn’t the vehicle- or the person who was riding in the driver’s seat- at fault. She wasn’t in a crosswalk and moved into traffic.
-
Which is something that can happen at any time and any place. Would rather put the driving decision in the hand of a human.
