Today’s teens have been raised on cellphones and social media. Should we worry about them or just get out of their way?https://nyti.ms/2pX8M54

I think something we didn't expect is happening. The meanness of social media has made this generation's kids preternaturally tough, quick, and battle ready. I thought it would ruin them. Maybe it will. But at least some seem sharpened and BOLD.

I gernally agree. But I think it just makes the kids capable of being thick-skinned get even tougher, and the weak get trampled harder and faster than before.

I agree. I'm not advocating for mean or social media. I hate generalizations. I think I just mean I think these kids in particular show a toughness and a savvy that seems different from previous generations.

Really interesting thread. My mom was 17 in 1967. She told me once that if social media existed in the late sixties that her generation may have helped end the Vietnam War 4 or 5 years earlier. I’m not sure what forged that generation but liking what I see in this one.

Wow, Tony, cheers to your mom! As I showed the documentary about Vietnam War to my students, I could not help bragging about the students then and how courageous and just they behaved. A country has a future when its young generation take a stand and voice it!

Kids are always smarter, nimble, agile and about 10k other adjectives describing youth. What they lack are experience and perspective.

Ok, I'll hop in: Why do you asseverate that today kids are "smarter" and put a picture of some kids that are protesting against the NRA?What makes you think they are right? What makes you think this is the right thing to do? Are you guys holding the truth? This is poor journalism.

Frankly, I think we need to stop assuming that these teenagers are as dense as we were at that same age. They are plugged in, well informed, mindful and most of all, they are RIGHT. Rather than step aside, walk beside them and cheer them on. We failed them.

Maybe we could stop over analyzing everything as if we “know better”...for god’s sake, vast majority of boomers (not all), you are NOT the end all be all! No one is! That’s the beauty of each generation! Different perspectives, different cultures!

Let’s just not attack any generation...no one is “better” than anyone else it’s all perspective at this point...aren’t we all just trying to live better lives?
