Some voters said they had been paid, from about $3 to $9, to vote. In several areas, government officials promised voters improved services, like electricity or sanitation, if they cast their votes.https://nyti.ms/2I8Myo2

Just persuading poor people to express with their ballots the free political sentiments they may be too lazy to bother expressing at the polls. But it can be misused to force those who’d rather vote by not voting than be caught and punished for showing their true sentiment.

SMH!!! 2020? YUP! Now I could see that being done in the East, Midwest, and all Southern state's! Lies, money, and poverty go a long way; especially if you still live in the past!

I want to clarify something: politicians should be buying voters' votes by promising (& delivering) on services (electricity...) making their lives better. Pols don't just work for their #Big💰 donors. Legalized bribery, @nytimes, that's the story, but you're part of it!

No, politicians should be promising services to everyone, not just to those who vote for them. That’s the problem here.

That's what I'm saying. Everyone living in their region benefits when they go to office to bat for the public. As is, Pols owe too many favors to #Big💰 who buys them into office.

I don’t disagree, but that’s way different than buying votes. People shouldn’t be rewarded for voting a certain way, or voting at all. The benefits offered by a politician should be universal.

I look at a politician promising, then delivering, on efforts to makes constituents' lives better, the same as buying votes. If they fail to deliver, vote them out & let someone else try to earn the vote.

What you've just described is a politician doing his job. And again, there's a difference, I think, between promising to make SOME of your constituents' lives better, and promising to make ALL or MOST of your constituents' lives better.

I don't know if things work differently here in Egypt, I'll admit, but where I'm from, every elected official from city council member up to the president is expected to represent ALL constituents, not just the ones that voted for them.

You're exactly right. That's NOT how it works in America. Our politics is 100% corrupt. There are many ways to legally bribe them. Our Reps don't serve ppl in their district, whether they voted for them, or not. Ours serve #Big💰 only.
