In Opinion, Isabelle Robinson, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, writes, "The idea that we are to blame, even implicitly, for the murders of our friends and teacher, is a slap in the face to all victims and survivors."https://nyti.ms/2GbwOUN

Incredible and powerful piece. Everyone should read it and then the adults should start behaving like adults. Why is it only teenagers who are wondering how to interrupt this cycle of violence?

This reminds me of a situation w/my son. Boy in his class is always in trouble, kids dont like him. I have overheard them talk about him. Told son to be nice, sent son to a bday party at boys house. Son tells me boy took a stick & beat a dog on a chain. My son cant "help" him.

Your son related the story to you. What did you do? That incident if handled appropriately could have saved this child and helped him get the help he needed.

Why don't we focus on identifying the fraction of 1% of people, especially focused on young people, who exhibit psychopathic behavior??? See something, say sonething for mass killers!!

In Parkland, everyone saw and everyone said. The killer’s foster family are gun nuts and let him amass a mini-arsenal in his bedroom closet. Foster dad said he would not have done anything different in retrospect. Such is the lunacy of America’s gun addicts.

Can anyone tell me at what point she tried to befriend him like the title suggests? All I read was that she was assigned to tutor him....

The piece is oddly edited, "befriend" seems the wrong word to me too. I'm thinking they cut bits out and that would include a list of unrelated instances of trying to be nice. In any case the kid had problems that his family and therapists couldn't help, I don't blame his peers

It's not their fault. But if we're going to pretend that bullying and "ostracism" won't push some kids into violence, we're going to see this again.

Bullying definitely causes some kids to lash out. No argument there. But some kids, even at young ages, are so far out there, that no amount of kindness from kids can help them. At that point, the adults really need to step in.

I think it is abhorrent that there are gov't officials & adults who have the nerve to suggest that children need to learn cpr or that they are responsible for their peers behavior. The adults have failed period. The adults have failed & now want to blame. Shame on those adults.

Why lie? No one threatened those kids. Disagreeing with an uninformed and immature viewpoint isn't threatening. Are you so immature that you perceive discourse as a threat?
