The surprise discussions added another layer of complexity to the rush of global diplomacy around North Korea’s nuclear weapons programhttps://nyti.ms/2pI8ZJ4

THREAD: 1) either we have a scenario whereby Xi and Kim met with no coordination with the US ( that's what the sloppy WH press statement implies) or Press Sec made us look unnecessarily out of the loop. Either way bad for us.

        2) The ambiguous Chinese "message" to @potus referenced in the statement also makes no sense. Did Xi confirm the Trump/ Kim meeting or not? Trump blasted out the private message from Kim to meet a few weeks ago but now Press Sec is being tight lipped but alluding to a message?

        3) The fact of Kim/ Xi meeting isn't a bad thing - I was remember times when enemies met with a 3rd party and we helped coordinate, do planning behind the scenes with the 3rd party to ensure we were on the same page/ there were no surprises. We didn't need to physically be there.

        4) The rub is if the Chinese and DPRK met, we didn't coordinate with them in advance AND our @ODNIgov intel is so bad that we didn't know it was happening until it happened?

But the boss doesn't dare to offend his employee, I'm afraid. NK's nuclear weapons are also aimed at its primary patron. If Mr. Kim thinks China fails him, the little rock man will bring own fury and fire to northeastern China.
