Ethically, your medical information is private. When the public accepts that a mental illness is comparable to diabetes. The only time your employer needs to be informed is if your workplace is the cause of your illness.

If the person decides to come out with the exact reason, more power to them! However, if they don’t want to disclose the exact problem to their employer - that’s okay too! It’s a personal & sensitive topic.. it’s okay to deal with full disclosure in YOUR timeframe.

I agree with you Jordan but the point I was trying to make, although not very well, is that mental illness needs to have the same acceptance as diabetes. There is a level of shame associated with having mental health issues.

Agreed! Your point is well made. It’s a process for everyone, I wish it didn’t have to be! But maybe in time. There shouldn’t be stigma, AND people need time to process in their own terms.

a) no.. b) if you're productive and doing your job, screw them c) again no..the reason you have time off is irrelevant..it doesn't matter if you are in pain, have herpes, have gastro, rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes or anxiety/panic disorder.

your sick leave/personal leave (depending on your country of residence) should not depend on the "legitimacy" of your condition, as judged by someone who is not medically trained.

Wow good article. I suffer from mental illness. I have for 22 years now. It’s the hardest struggle of my life. I am now on disability. My last job did work with me bc I was finally honest about being sick.
