Internet companies were built on a model in which people gave up their information for free services. Now, that idea is under siege.https://nyti.ms/2IOAQ31

There’s a difference between using customer data and showing us advertisement and taking all our data selling it to third parties that use it against their subscribers. Be it free or not.

It was our metadata that made them incredibly profitable- maybe we all should be compensated in micro payments for selling that data?

That’s their problem. The Fourth Amendment guarantees privacy and corporate efforts to subvert that right by subterfuge is illegal and must be prosecuted. Google and Facebook must pay up and then change their model or get out of the way for players who follow the law.

If it leads these companies to solve the micro payments problem it would revolutionise publishing online for everyone.

No we were willing to give up some info not all. They took it to a whole new level of invasion of privacy. Give it is inch & take a miles.

As someone who used to work in social media data analysis I used to think consumers would trade privacy for marketing tailored specifically to individual. Now however it is abused by govt & pols. Needs regulation.

Maybe the internet model of "free information" needs to follow the FCC licensing model of TV before cable: highly regulated and heavy government involvement.

People were ‘told’ companies didn’t need to be regulated because there were laws stopping them from abusing their personal data. Companies ALWAYS will do what is profitable, not what is legal. It’s part of their risk management.
