This is not about "harassment as some fringe feminists suggesting but personality. Some people can take it other won't. If you can't it's not for you! A firefighter must deal fire, A doctor with blood, A policeman with violence. And them? With cheeky customers.

I live in Rome, Italy where the wait staff are paid a decent enough wage that the customer pays for their food and that is that. Tipping is not expected and if you try to tip, it's considered almost an insult in some places. Why can't North America sort it out?

We need to pay decent wages to servers and end the absurd tipping system.

Guy at my table put 10 ones on the table when he sat down with his gf and told me that he’d take one away for every mistake I made. I picked them up, folded them, and put them in his shirt pocket and said, “I just bought ten mistakes. I’m not telling you what they will be.”

The only issue here is the tipping. Now the whole “harassment” drama must be part of the new sanctity aura that everybody has nowadays. If you go to a restaurant and service is good, it should be rewarded with 18% or more tip. Period.

power imbalance? here is my experience: wealthy people have a servitude trip, and white entitlement plays it like a fiddle. Don't want to tip us? quit hoarding all of the wealth or make your own food, and massage your own body, wash your own car, clean your own toilet. . .

Every European I know tells me that service in the USA is much better than places that don't utilize tipping to reward good service.

This system seems to be almost purely American. Everywhere else I've been in the world you tip any amount if you think your service was worthy of it, but most of the time if you don't tip, nobody really cares because while not fantastic their basic wage is enough.

Tipping or not, an asshole customer is going to always be that. Likewise for a nice person.. If you want to address tipping, ensure employers pay a living wage to their staff.
