Internal documents show Uber’s self-driving car project wasn’t living up to expectations well before a fatal crash in Tempe, Arizonahttps://nyti.ms/2uazNqI

A woman runs in front of a car in the middle of the night and the world blames self driving cars? Anyone who saw the video knows that even if it was a f1 driver in that seat that woman would have died. She came out of the pitch black walked right infront of a car with headlights

The car uses LIDAR so it should see in the dark. She was already halfway across the road when she appears in the video and 3/4 when she was hit. The car should have seen it and Uber's tech messed up. Problem is uber tech, not self driving cars.

I disagree, the video shows the woman clearly walk out of the darkness in front of the car. Its not at an intersection, theres no cross walk. What if the driver is drunk? What if the driver is falling asleep? Humans are more imperfect, which is why you dont walk in front of cars.

But darkness doesn't matter, because LIDAR can see in total darkness. Also, she's already halfway across the entire road (but only just stepping into his lane) when the normal camera shows her. Like @Google's car, Uber's should have detected her already on the road and slowed..

If a human cant react any better than the self driving programs, if the person was illegally crossing the road where she shouldnt be and neglected looking to their right and seeing the headlights oncoming, then the fault is 100% hers and blaming self driving car tech isnt right

Seems we have different standards for what we think a self-driving car should be able to do. Me? I want my self-driving cars to be able to stop if, say, a child runs out in front of them when they shouldn't, and I want them to be better than humans.

I agree, and I dont believe the program should be should shut down due to suicidal pedestrians. If you know how algorithms are structured, and you know that the best tech in the world cant stop a 60km/h object within 0.5 seconds, then you would understand why this happened

I'm doing a PhD in computer science, so I've got some idea. My whole argument is that this shows Uber's program has issues, especially compared with Google's. I also pointed out where those issues are, such as not detecting a pedestrian who is already on the road.

I never understood why Uber was in that business to start with. Leave it to high tech companies, please.

I’ve driven and ridden in plenty of Volvo’s in my time and never seen lighting that bad. It must’ve had some ultra dim setting I’ve never heard of. Something’s not right here.

So,I guess BIG business is trying to justify saving $ by driverless cars. They figure people being killed by these cars is just the cost of doing business&worth the tax write off before even studying the actual consequences & impact of loss of life & jobs! America is in trouble!

Humans are better drivers than computers. Unless of course the human is drunk as a skunk.

Didn’t they move to Arizona because CA had all sorts of regulations to prevent just such a fatal crash? And the AZ governor or someone tweeted at Uber or something bragging that they wouldn’t have so many regulations in AZ? Yeah, CA is the winner here, me thinks.

So you mean it isn't good enough to decide whether to swerve by using alpha version python libs, with input from a camera that can see 1/10th of what human eyes can see in the dark?
