If you liked Kim Kardashian on Facebook, researchers can tell how extroverted (very), conscientious (more than most) and open-minded (somewhat) you are. And then they can use that, and your other Facebook likes, to predict your political views.http://nyti.ms/2FXNN91

I can tell you that if you liked Kim Kardashian on Facebook that you’re an imbecile. See how easy that is?

I think that it is hooey that this was how Trump won the US election, since it is not clear how such a model could be used (even if it had accuracy mildly greater than chance). At minimum, there would have to be more to the story (more data theft, more collusion by Facebook).

This feels like when companies embedded "subliminal" messages in movies - it sounded really nefarious, but turned out to ineffective and unsophisticated.

Survey takers must hate themselves. The data collected is stupid and really doesn't teach them anything about humans and what motivates them. It's adorable that they think it does.

Isn't it easier, cheaper, more accurate to just check my voter registration if you want to know who I'll probably vote for?

I wonder what they would say about me...my "likes" ran the gambit from Catholicism to pagan, conservative to liberal, Ozzy to Liszt...you get the point. While FB can suggest a person's position, without knowing why they liked something or someone this data is subjective at best.
