If the self driving tech ends up saving thousands annually from unnecessary violent death due to human idiocy would you still be opposed?

How many more a day do the Self-Driving cars have to kill to catch up to the human-driving death toll?

It’s tough to say. The standard KPI is deaths/100MM VMT, and I cant find any info on VMT for self driving cars. But If Uber was testing at the same rate in their AZ program as Google in CA, their appx. rate is now 100 deaths/100MM VMT, much higher than conventional vehicles.

Interesting. I wonder if they are driving in more densely populated areas?

There’s just not enough data. It’s likely the rate is and will be much lower than that. I think autonomous cars will not be the panacea everyone’s hoping for though. It’s hard to imagine it will ever be safe to move a 3000 lb. missile through our built environment at 35-80 ft/s.

Perhaps not, I do have hopes for them increasing travel in Rural areas for disabled/elderly people. Traffic deaths with human drivers is still a wildly unsafe venture, so I'm open to all ideas to increase safety. Thanks for the feedback.

I think they’ll be wonderful, especially if used how you describe, but safety will probably be best improved by decreasing VMT and improving road design. Strong local economies built around good bike and pedestrian infrastructure could do both of those things.

Car accidents are like the second leading cause of death in the world. Self driving cars will save millions.

Our transportation systems seem inherently dangerous, with roads designed to prioritize moving cars over protecting people. I can't imagine that having 3000 lb. missiles moving 35-80 ft/s through our complex built environment will ever be safe, regardless of who's driving

yes this is misrepresentation, reading between the lines it wasn't on AI proper term, it was driven by an instructor who obviously paid too much attention to the equipment and not where he was driving? Is this a spin against driver less cars?
