Selfdriven cars will kill. It's inevitable & everyone acknowledges this. They just will kill 95% less than those with a human behind the wheel & that's good enough for me.

What will be the legal liabilities of the backup driver?

Some liability should be on the driver, just like a human pilot is responsible for monitoring the auto pilot system. The insurer of the car/human driver should recoup it's losses from the software developer or manufacturer for the defect.

Also depends on who is at fault. In this most recent case, there is a possibility that a human driver would not have been able to avoid the pedestrian either. They believe that she was out of sight up until stepping into the lane of traffic.

Same thing that happened when humans go haywire, except with computers it happens way less often.

You are right, but computers are no match for human brain that darts along the unexplored tracks with it own conclusions. It is not programed like a computer. Any machine can malfunction very often, and so does the human brain, but with far less frequency.

Should they look for ways to improve their tech? YES - always and consistently. We don't yet know all the details of this accident, nor what "choice" the computer had to make (if it even was avoidable). Humans make mistakes - computer errors are made by programming errors.

cars in general are big hulking vehicles capable of inflicting a lot of damage. self driving cars were never a solution to car accidents but an evolution in technology to cause less of them
