After we published an article examining how servers endure harassing behavior for tips, readers wrote in with their experiences in restaurants — both as servers and customers http://nyti.ms/2ICXxHm pic.twitter.com/aqOx8Nu0v4

Did anyone bother to tell her/him that feigning sexual interest in your customers should not be commensurate with your pay scale?
You just stated that you demean yourself for tips!
If she doesn't feel demeaned, that's up to her. There's no need to use a one-size-fits-all approach. She's an adult and can make up her own mind. Maybe she'll see her experiences different someday, but right now she feels successful and in control. And that's fine.
I was replying to her "one size fits all" comment. I don't think flirting for tips is demeaning. Strippers feel successful and in control. Bet Stormy feels that way too. And that's fine.
Waitresses have it 100x worse than me, but as a guy, this sort of patronizing behavior is extremely obnoxious. At the same time, it’s not their fault, it’s the tipping system’s fault. Just freaking pay these workers decent money and then everyone will be happy!
I got inappropriate comments and even marriage proposals as a waitress, and I had to play nice instead of saying "f**k off you weirdo" cause I was depending on the tip to follow, that's demeaning. if one person chooses to flirt for tips that's fine, but you shouldn't have to!
However many humans there are in the world, that’s how many entirely unique perspectives there are. We are constantly running into this issue of discussing problems as if there’s only one correct solution for everyone.
You are a victim of a system that forces you to flirt for money.
Flirting to get better tips is exactly playing on sexist power imbalances.
If u initiate it, all is good.
I hate to tell people this and I'm not necessarily condoning it, but the reality of the world is this: sex sells. Or even just the whiff of the faintest sexual interest. It's not limited to the restaurant industry. Look at the attractiveness of women in the pharma sales industry
Lap dances also are pretty effective.
lol at all the ugly women who are upset about this.
You guys still have readers? I find that highly unlikely.
I definitely embrace the practice of tipping for flirts. For many of us, it's literally the only way we can get that kind of attention.
You just can't take sexuality out of humanity...It's a matter of drawing lines of reasonableness.
