After we published an article examining how servers endure harassing behavior for tips, readers wrote in with their experiences in restaurants — both as servers and customers http://nyti.ms/2ICXxHm pic.twitter.com/aqOx8Nu0v4

You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat their server at a restaurant.

Amen. Any form of disdain toward a server shows a person's arrogance and distance from compassion. Everyone has a cracked shell in this life...imagine if we remembered that in our walk among people today?

I think everyone should spend 6 months working in the service industry, just to experience what it's like and what people working there have to endure. You'll be a lot nicer to waiting staff afterwards I'm sure.

Well it's a function of businesses not paying their servers adequately! So they rely on tips.

What if the function of business included some humanity and compassion? You can run a successful, thriving business with integrity and compassion. It's a choice. Always.

Once again a broad stroke is being used by NYT. I would never harass a server and yet I am being lumped into this category all for a trending headline. Shame on you NYT.

40 yrs ago it was common for waitresses to feel hands up their skirts or have their breasts grabbed. I put up with it as most did. Complaining meant losing your job or worse (finding someone waiting outside waiting for your shift to end to teach you a lesson). It is a hard life.

I was in NYcouple of years ago. My family and I ate at a restaurant opposite Central Park. I left a 10%tip typical in Uk and I waiter came out of the restaurant and came up to me in the street asking for more as this was not goood enough for NY. I was shocked but paid. Idiot me

I blame greedy restaurant owners for downloading their responsibility on to their cusomers and then framing like tipping is the right thing to do.

Waitress and customer service rep for 30 years. Best day? Was when I got a thorough cursing out for not being able to take a person's insurance payment over the phone using cash... I was the worst person ever! Imagine that, I cannot accept cash over the phone.....

Just ask African Americans how they’ve been treated by servers. It was just in the news how black diners at an IHop were asked to pay up front but not the white diners.

I have never worked a server position in my life because I knew even at 13 exactly what it entailed. there are other ways to make money, it’s really despicable that in some places you can offer a 5$/hr wage + tips as an incentive to work harder. better idea? shares, commission

there are bette jobs. I work in construction now. there are more and more women earning a FARE wage in trades. it’s intimidating at first but you’d be surprised how many women there are how respectful the men are. the whole environment is more professional when there is balance
