Lewd comments. Sexual overtures. Groping. Restaurant servers put up with a lot in pursuit of the tips they need to make a living, constantly deciding where to draw the line.http://nyti.ms/2tAd3A8

Brings back memories of my time working in food service. It wasn't only the customers but some of the employees too and especially managers.
-
And NO ! It was not worth while in my experience.

As a customer, I find it unfair to put me in a position that has to dictate the servers reward for service. This should be on the owners, not their customers. It's awkward and it's desperate.

No job should require a woman have to give up her dignity. But, if you have kids to feed, you are forced into this awful position. Pay people a decent wage and get rid of tipping altogether. Show some respect for all professions.

When I was nineteen I was a cocktail waitress in a bar near a university campus. I was young, cute, blonde and busty. The more harassing and "flirting" I had to endure, the less welcoming I was to it and the more businesslike I became. And my tips suffered.

Worked in the service industry for 15 years. You deal with atleast one extremely entitled asshole every day, 9/10 they don’t tip well. They are the few who look at us service industry folk as peasants
-
I make my money off of giving excellent service, if I don’t make good tips it’s not on me. Split between staff equally, then taxed 40% by employer. Bringing my A game every day is not a choice
-
Ya, just imagine if employers actually competed for quality servers with... Wait for it... A stable wage? I know, crazy thought.

This is all very interesting. When I began teaching etiquette about 20 years ago I thought back then that gratuities would be a thing of the past. Now I'm sure it's coming soon due to these stories. Establishments will probably adopt a "service compris" system.

Some of the higher end restaurants don't allow tipping. They higher and train quality servers and more than make up for the difference with the price of food.
