Henrietta Lacks never traveled farther than Baltimore from her family home in southern Virginia, but her cells have traveled around the earth and far above it, toohttp://nyti.ms/2FOriD2

This is fascinating. Especially how we're concerned with whether she got any compensation or gave consent. It seems only natural to require consent to use part of someone's body like this, right? So where's my consent/compensation for my foreskin, harvested and sold at birth?pic.twitter.com/wBrDsNec1H

What gives them that right? They couldn't consent on my behalf to have an arm removed, or a finger, or an ear or literally any other piece of flesh without an urgent medical need. What makes my foreskin, my most sensitive parts, okay to rip off and sell with parental consent?

Millions of boys have their foreskins taken away without their consent and without a medical reason every year via #circumcision. Taking away a few of her cells surely isn't as serious as living your entire mutilated.

Show me one scientist that made millions out of that cell line specifically? That cell line is very old and one of the most contaminated so pretty useless now anyway.

Fascinating story. The book by Rebecca Skloot was extraordinary, fascinating, intriguing. It was one of those rare books that one was compelled to read in one sitting. I am pleased that Henrietta is one who is being honored today by NYT.
