With her passion for wine, swords and bomb making, Qiu Jin was unlike most women born in late 19th-century China. To this day, she is often referred to as “China’s Joan of Arc."http://nyti.ms/2pgHBBL

I mean... and keep in mind, this is a wild suggestion... how about she was just the boss that was Qiu Jin? Why does she have to be equated with a western woman to be considered more powerful/amazing? Nah, she was Qiu motherfucking Jin. The Qiu Jin of China.

And before anyone comes for my throat, its not that Joan of Arc didn't do anything. It is the fact that Joan is being used as a pillar to show the badassery of Qiu Jin. We don't need to hold western women as the standard of powerful women.

I agree. There was similar article about Indian actress Madhubala, she was India’s Marilyn Monroe. I mean, why?

LMAOOO What?!?! "this exotic woman made people feel things in India, kinda like how Marilyn Monroe made us all feel things!" So.... so Madhubala was beautiful woman with extraordinary acting skills that spoke to the society she worked in? Its not a competition.

To redirect the story to a western figure ultimately sends a message that these women can not stand on their own as figures. They need a western (white) woman to be compared to.

They started with this, ‘obituaries dominated by white men’, now it’s almost repeating the same thing, no? Like, - hey we will mention all the great strong personalities across the world, but but, we shall also not forget to mention the western white personalities too.pic.twitter.com/2gVMmnZQpe

Every non western figure need not be compared with some western icon. Yesterday, Mudhabla was India's Marlyn Munore & now this.

Overlooked Obits. Charlotte Brontë wrote “Jane Eyre”; Emily Warren Roebling oversaw construction of Brooklyn Bridge when her husband fell ill; Madhubala transfixed Bollywood; Ida B. Wells campaigned against lynching. Their deaths went unremarked in NYTimes. Remember amazing women

Do you all realize that the French Joan of Arc was burned at the stake->because she crossed dressed with male clothing; she wanted to remain in military garb. She refused to wear what the Church deemed appropriate. Claiming to hear God speaking to her, was only a secondary issue.
