To abolish the coin would be "to give into inflation and to trash 1,000 years of history," one person tweetedhttp://nyti.ms/2FPDUKb

In Australia they removed 1 cent and 2 cent coins from circulation back in the 1980s if my memory serves me right, the sky didn't fall in.

So in Australia the price of everything ends in 5 or 0?

No, if you buy something that costs $19.77 and pay with a $20 note then you would get back 0.25 cents in change. If it was $19.78 then you'd get back 0.20 cents. It's rounded to the nearest 0 or 5 when paying with cash.

The penny costs more to make than it is worth. We should just switch over to 5 cent increments and be done with it.

How about place lots of coin counters around town so we may turn the piles of coins in our homes into useful money.

So condescending of you, thank you, most banks don’t have the coin counting machines which make the conversions easy. Have a lovely day.

We have this conversation in the US every now and again. The problem is that, although the penny has so little value, it is still used. As long as it is used, you can't really get rid of it. We'd have to go to 5 cent increments.

Canada also has a government that protects its citizens. We don't. We would see our prices go up and rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

We don't "use" pennies. When we are given them in change we immediately put them in a jar somewhere. It's many years since I carried around pennies or 2ps to pay for anything.
