        Shouldn't they be not allowed to own stock then? If selling based on what they hear is illegal? Can't play the lotto if ya work for them for example

        A lot of people don't own stock in companies they work for, it's risky for a lot of reasons. Also, It's not just employees who can be guilty of insider trading, it's anyone who makes trade based on insider knowledge.

        for example, if the Equifax CEO told a friend about the data breach before it was public knowledge and that friend sold their stock, the friend would guilty of insider trading.
