Of course, if they were paid a living wage this would be much easier to solve.

There hasn’t been a raise in the tipped minimum wage in 30 years.
-
Some states have... but federally and in most states it is still comparable to free labor.
-
My hourly wage doesn’t even cover the tax from my tips, which many places calculate off your sales, not what you actually receive.
-
And if a patron stiffs you? After tax and tip out? Pfft. You just lost double.

Australia's rates of pay for service/hospitality per hour is $18. Weekend rates $25. If some guy hit on a staff member he would be escorted out the door by manger. Just not tolerated. Aussie chicks rock...and the guys to.Come on down ,we will look after you. Cheers.
-
That is tempting for sure! Every Aussie I’ve met has been lovely.

This isn't just with servers, which I am one, but any retail or hospitality industry. Too often, a customer/guest feels entitled to outrageous behavior & companies reward it with comps & apologies out of fear of upsetting one unruly person.
-
Totally agree, but as you know copping an attitude as a server might get you stiffed whereas copping an attitude as a cashier might just get you complained about

Why don't they pay servers a decent wage like they do in
#Australia . ? Nobody tips over there because they pay servers a good wage -
Same in Canada

Maybe the patrons shouldn’t be expected to pay their salaries. Maybe the restaurant should pay an actual salary. Tipping is terrible for both sides. The patron feels bad giving less than 20%. Are the meals really underpriced by 20%? It’s an absurd system.
-
I don’t think any patron feels guilty leaving less than 20% and I make way more in a night with tips than i would with a standard hourly wage. Isn’t the old argument that if we’re paid a wage, food and beverage costs go up?
-
The guilty thing is true. Maybe incorrect of me to say all patrons feel that. You clearly make good tips, congrats. I know servers who report they have paycheck sums of zero because more is withheld than their base pay, which suggests patrons are expected to pay their salary
-
Haha my checks are $0 and I definitely don’t always get good tips on every check, I’m just saying that the people who tip low or not at all definitely dont feel guilty about it
-
Yeah some people are A-holes. I occasionally tip under 20 (it’s rare but if service is rude... even then we still tip). My peers report the same. Are you supposed to tip on take out? Because I do that too, typically about 20%.
-
large majority of people are good. But then you have people ordering all the seafood&expensive beer and barely leave 10% that gets frustrating esp when they pay w/ $100.You don’t have to but it’s always nice since there’s still some1 taking the order and making sure it’s right
-
I just feel really weird about tipping. I do it because I’m currently in an economic position to do so (arguably if you’re not, you probably shouldn’t be eating out), but it’s a weird feeling to sense a requirement that if I don’t leave 20% my server will likely not be paid.
-
Taking orders, serving drinks/refills, serving food, making sure everything is good, getting any extras needed, and cleaning up afterwards.... I wish My kid and my SO would tip me
