“I get a lot of ‘I feel sorry for your baby.’ Or, ‘Don’t you need to be at home with your baby?’ Or, ‘A mother not being with their child at this stage could negatively affect how the child grows up.’ It’s discouraging.”http://nyti.ms/2Ibp2ra

Most of the comments below show how much misogyny is still present in North American society. Men can do practically nothing but donate sperm & $$ and few will question them but the minute a woman tries to serve her country and raise kids we wail "but think about the children"!

Hopefully those kids don’t grow up to be adults who ask questions like that.

I mean, how old is the baby? Why do people act like it's not honorable to care for their babies for a certain period of time?

Strange problems, a father can do the same thing like a mother it's just that one of the parents should stay the first years around the baby

Follow your heart, do what’s right for you and your children and you’ll never go wrong. If you listen to to all the well-meaning souls from society you’ll end up in a terrible place, much better to smile sweetly even as you ignore every word.

Well it is difficult, the more accepted it is with women combining children and work and the more supporting measures there are in place and participating from the men ,the easier and better it will get.

Considering she is getting TWO weeks while in the summer vacation when everyone in the gov is not working... Why exactly? Do you complain the same way against Trump and his constant golf vacations? Considering their work doesn't suffer, this is bullshit. Also, 24/7? Ahaha. No.

Still don't see how those criticisms are somehow invalid. Time spent working is time that can't be spent with the child - is that controversial to anyone?
