In Opinion, Op-Ed contributor Elizabeth Hinton writes, "It could help shrink our prison population. While racial disparities in arrests and convictions are alarming, education level is a far stronger predictor of future incarceration than race."http://nyti.ms/2D9OoSA

“A study published in 2013 by the right-leaning RAND Corporation showing that inmates who took classes had a 43 % lower likelihood of recidivism and a 13% higher likelihood of getting a job after leaving prison.” Today, 1/3 of prisons help prisoners continue education beyond HS.

What a world, turning schools into prisons and prisons into schools.

Yes to this, and: The power of education, even late, is an unrivaled pillar to a healthy society. In addition to all we have, we need an affirming do-school-again program; a sort of second chance school for all those who for one reason or another were disenfranchised in run one.

There’s a close correlation between education level and intelligence level I believe. Many people suffer from poor education, but the bright ones make it through anyway.

You'd have to start at much lowet level than college for many inmates based on my limited experience but a learning center combined with clinical services for all would have a massive impact. Private sector could possibly help fund & hire post release.

Anything we can do to reduce our prison population is good. It makes sense to educate prisoners so they can become taxpayers who contribute to society once released. The cycle of release (w/o prep/tools) /re-jail must end. The system now is a moral disgrace and dysfunctional.

I bet ending for profit prisons would shrink our prison population, who utilize that little provision in the 13th amendment that still makes slavery perfectly fine as long as it applies to prisoners.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Still looks like slavery to me.

& here I was thinking prison was supposed to be a punishment ... you want to make it into a free educational facility ... entry based on committing a crime against society.
