The truth is that you don't need, nor should you want, an AR-15 to protect your home. That is actually a bad choice. So is a handgun. A shotgun is best because you don't need to aim and it won't shoot through walls. This line of argument is bogus even from a pro-gun perspective.

Correct but fail to understand that some people have land. An AR will be handy then unless you can shoot a coyote with a shotgun or handgun 10 yards away.
-
I was responding to the op-ed, which is talking about protecting your family at home, not shooting coyotes on your acreage. Whether you want a hunting rifle vs AR to shoot coyotes is a different debate.
-
I understand what you’re getting at. The thing is a hand gun is easier to use than a shotgun. Easier to move with and you only need a few shots to get it done. Aim small, miss small. A shotgun can easily tear up a target and its surroundings. And the racking noise is intimidating
-
The racking noise is a big part of why a shotgun is better for home protection. And the fact that you don't need to aim precisely in a panic, in the dark. Prob do want a short barrel shotgun. Op-ed talking about peson not a rec shooter or hunter, who wants to protect the home.
-
A shotgun will definitely go through walls.
-
True -- got to be careful with shotguns too. Just less of a risk than powerful rifles or handguns.
-
I don’t think I agree with that statement either. It all depends on what weapon used and what ammo used. All guns and rifles are not “powerful” (nice scary term that really has no quantifiable results)

We have to empathize with Ms. Mandel's experience, but wouldn't she feel better knowing the neo-Nazis couldn't buy assault rifles than she does by arming herself? Maybe the answer is fewer neo-Nazis and not more guns.
-
That sounds like a different argument entirely, and that doesn’t cover the other fields on the political spectrum that carry/use guns.

anti-vaxxers think they’re protecting their kids too that’s because they’re ignorant, and you shouldn’t give them a platform

Gun owners love being gun owners. A gun is a central part of their identity. They love to have it, hold it, carry it, display it, shoot it. They love the image, the power and the potential to destroy. It's a testosterone high. It is an affliction.
-
Seriously? You don’t know a bleeping thing about gun owners and probably guns. Most guns stay in the safe, drawer or closet and rarely get fired. Hunters and sport shooters use their guns regularly. Lots of men and women like to shoot targets at a range. Then back in the case.

This despite data which shows a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used intentionally or unintentionally to kill or injure an occupant than be used in self defence.
-
do you have a source for that?

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9715182 But in this case the stat is not absurd - except in the sense people continue to keep guns in their homes despite it being accurate.
