Healthcare, higher education, now culture...systematically being reserved for those who have, and the have-nots be damned. What next? Such a dismal moment.

It costs money, and lots of it, to operate a institution of this size. How do people expect them to pay the bills. Donors will pay for new gallery spaces to put their name on, but not to pay the electric bill. Nothing is free in this world, everything costs money to someone!

I don’t know about the Met and their funding but as someone who’s worked in museums and archives I feel for institutions when they do this. I never want to charge money for our history or culture but at the same time the task of preservation is enormous.

Isn't there the "First Monday In May" fundraiser thing that @voguemagazine does with the @metmuseum?The appeal was that the experience of the Met was accessible to everyone b/c of the fundraiser. So why start charging a set fee now. I hope these wealthy patrons hear about this.

Wow ! Rights to culture? Why don’t the people that work at the Met just donate their time? And where are the rich progressives to fund it? Their hypocrisy never fails to amaze me.

If one would not think twice to go the the met for a short visit to see a few specific works - Maybe spend an hour. If you are poor this is no longer a spontaneous possibility. This is sad 😔

This expensive world is making museums and galleries harder to exist. They must sell art, solicit donations, or charge admission. Or a combination.

"they also seek out art and historical objects in such collections as a source for inspiration" True. Because with historical objects you don't have to worry a "rightsholder" is going to pop up demanding C&D and damage payments

I always paid the full suggested donation feeling that my donation helped other people come and pay what they could. This change may help the museum stay open but at what cost?
