“I think a lot of people feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of the plastic problem. Giving up plastic straws is a small step, and an easy thing for people to get started on.”http://nyti.ms/2FbyWr5

They sell reusable glass straws in Costa Rica so you can bring your own (like a water bottle)

Maybe they stop making plastic straws and go back to the old paper ones.

Another idea! Charge 5 cents per plastic bag! Suffolk County in Long Island does it! It hasn't hit Nassau yet. You'll be surprised how many people refuse to pay. I think it's a fantastic idea!

My county in CA does it. Have for a while and it's amazing how many people still ball at paying for bags or forget to bring theirs.

Agreed. But some disabled people need to be able to use lightweight straws - paper maybe?

Excellent point, there should be eco friendly options available should a straw be needed.

My wife, who is disabled, is unable to use heavier metal or glass straws because she is unable to hold the straw comfortably in her mouth. We tend to use one plastic straw until it breaks.

My mother was paralyzed from brain cancer needed straws too. My thinking is something lightweight like recyclable paper/corn starch straws. Eliminating plastic is necessary but keeping easy use for those who need them is essential too. Glass/metal can be too heavy for some.

Buy metal straws. They're awesome and easy to clean.

There are reusable and sustainable options for all the waste we already produce. It is very possible to live a greener life, all the while saving money and feeling good about your smaller carbon footprint.

I remember waxed paper straws and they were fine. Also biting both ends off of a twizzler and using that as a straw is delish.
