There is no simple answer to what happened to Nakesha Williams — a life of spectacular promise undone by mental illness and homelessnesshttp://nyti.ms/2F8XiWm

Most wouldn't end up homeless if they weren't suffering from mental illness. I see so many in Grand Central every morning, and there's something there in their eyes, faces, they want to be back like everyone else, going to their jobs, getting on with life. How do we help them?

It is complicated and I’d like to offer that it is not about “helping” and it is about serving. Shelters are not safe. Affordable housing and Peer (Counselor) support are a good start. Peer run respite houses.

Affordable housing? WHAT? Many are suffering from severe mental illness, which IMO must first be addressed. THey're angry, violent, delusional, self-medicating, and can be dangerous. You want to put them in with poor families in affordable housing before treatment?

I would guess you are not a mental health professional or a peer. The stigmatization of people with mental illness is a problem. For example, Ppl who have schizophrenia are not violent, angry, etc. They are scared!

Yes, they're scared, then when feeling cornered strike out. These people need medical care first bef you place them in housing they can't manage or take care of with people who have no insight in to their issues. THey aren't ready to interact with neighbors, manage daily needs.

Bad health and misery can happen to anyone and disrupt t life. In a descent society there is healthcare that see no difference in if You are rich or poor or have an insurance of Your own,and people prepared to offer help.

The laws are such that even though mental health treatment is available you can choose not to accept it.. and the government can’t force you either

Powerful and tragic story. I can't help but imagine if Ms. Williams had never been molested as a child – she may well have had a prosperous and happy life. I am glad that despite her homeless status she had the support of so many people.

There is a need to find ways to help those who are mentally ill and exhibit symptoms that prevent them from getting the help they need. It is a cultural problem so it’s exceptionally hard to solve!
