"Nothing works when it snows in England," said a London-based accountant. "We don't have the right infrastructure or tools in place, so the city comes to a grinding halt, and people can't go about their business so they start to panic."http://nyti.ms/2FG0Axt

Most people are able to work form home these days anyway, so the impact is exaggerated. In London we have snow like this maybe every 5 years, so a couple of days working from home is better than paying for expensive infrastructure and equipment that we seldom use.

I would disagree that ‘MOST’ people can work from home. Most jobs still require attendance@

Fair challenge. I should have said “many”, thanks for correcting me. I also believe that those who are able to work from home should [be allowed to] do so during adverse weather thus freeing up capacity for those who have to travel.

Well, with THAT I totally agree! 😇. Total disclosure (as people say these days)...one of my best friends works from home and every time the weather is horrible she is grateful to be able to be home. I remember when ‘working from home’ became a reality! Changed the world!

It’s really not a problem - it’s a nuisance for a day or two. Our media are the culprits here for spreading ‘doomsday’ weather reports - most folks just layer-up and get on with it. It’s true that Londoners can’t cope but that’s only to be expected - bunch of ‘lovies’🙄

And "panic" manifests with Brits as "quiet desperation". Quaint.

Same as Paris when it’s snowing less than 5 centimeter of snow on the ground and roads are closed with trucks stucks by the snows. In the same time there is a tesla in space...

It's pathetic. The entire country grinds to a halt with one inch of snow. The Thames Valley bus service cancelled ALL bus services in Windsor at 07:00 yesterday morning!! #ItIsWinter

We need a pragmatic plan for when this happens. May only be once a year but the country seems to grind to a halt: people suffer, schools close, businesses impacted. Safety first but we could do with learning a thing or two from countries where this is consistently an issue.
