States comprising many nations, notably Austro-Hungarian Empire, were broken into (supposedly) homogeneous nation states. This reinforced the linguistic, ethnic, cultural (though not racial since race and nation have never been identified) notion of nationality.

Most facile, thoughtless, historically inaccurate, American-centric, drivel about nationalism I have ever seen. Idiots don't even distinguish between nations, states, and nation states. WWI did not usher in an era of "multicultural states." It did the opposite. 1/2

Food. All that matters is the food. The rest of that nationalism crap should go into the dumpster of history. Everybody get a holiday to celebrate their ethnic/national cuisine. Not their generals or their kings or their politicians.

Nation = ethnic and linguistic in-group. The U.S. is an Anglo-Germanic nation state that happened to have had a fairly unrestrictive immigration policy compared to European nations throughout most of its history, but nothing like the insanity currently masquerading as norms.
