Not sure that’s a good idea. It does have certain negative (read Nazi) overtones.

I would say it definitely has Nazi overtones

No please don't. Even in German, most people use that word wrong and it gets misused to propagate racism and identity politics

As a German let me just say you should rather learn one thing: Mitläufer Because Heimat is what Nationalists use to turn you into one of those
-
You say Heimat is a bad word? Is that correct?
-
It implies national pride and guess why that’s not regarded as a good thing over here. At least it wasn’t until the soccer world cup in 2006. And now the AfD has 15% of the seats in our parliament and they’re far right. Things change and not for the better
-
When I talk about Heimat it has no nationalistic connotations at all.For me, Heimat is the Bavarian countryside, where I grew up. The rest of Germany is not my Heimat.

Rather take
#Vielfalt,#Gemütlichkeit,#Achtsamkeit,#Solidarität,#Toleranz,#Offenheit,#Zuversicht - these are#Germanqualities as well. The#States aren't only dumb-asses like a#FakePresident and so the#Germans are diverse. Don't define by#prejudice.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@jochenbittner I have an update for you, from inside your cozy country. "Heimat is the opposite of feeling alien?" Maybe for you. But I've lived here 9 yrs, speak german, & still feel treated as alien, an oddity. ime it's just nationalism by another name. /cc@nytimes@nytopinion -
I've learned myself & from talking to other long-time expat residents: Germany can be a hard place to be an immigrant. I even hear it's hard for Germans from one region to feel accepted in another region. Please, don't export what's not working :-( /cc
