Really poor op-ed, especially for a scientist. Show me hospitals are closing because it's better or cheaper to not have them with data. Without it, I assume at least some number are closing because we require profits in medical care.

Uh, what? Why write this crap and allow it to be published? I guess appendicitis, tumors, broken bones and more is a DIY thing now.

Saying they’re becoming obsolete is very stupid. They are becoming less needed… People in a hospital will always need to lay down. #dumb

never, I know someone who had a diabetic stroke and lived in an ECW for three months. saying "get rid of hospitals" makes no sense, can you imagine how much it would cost for private citizens to have to provide all of that care? and of course we aren't trained doctors.

That’s a disingenuous headline. Less patients are admitted than the ‘80s, but patient care is tremendously more complex, and that trend isn’t going to reverse. Hospitals are here to stay. Let’s talk about how to improve the ones we have.

Teaching hospitals are plenty compensated with endowment funds, federal dollars (tax money!), cheap labor (interns in nursing, pharmacy, & medical), plus the money they bill insurance. Vast majority of hospitals have low census. Administrators game system: build big; charge more.

Obviously the NY Times hasn't seen a Canadian hospital where I had to wait 15hrs to recieve a bed when I had a burst cyst and a bad infection. We've had people die waiting for medical care up here.
