Opinion: For traditional conservatives, the past two years have felt like a Twilight Zone episode. Politicians, activists and intellectuals have succumbed with numbing regularity, betraying every principle they once claimed to uphold.http://nyti.ms/2HNaY6W

Good on New York Times for printing this and Mona Charen for writing it, but this phenomenon didn't start with Trump or in the last two years. This has been an ongoing devolution for decades. The difference is the level of blatant absurdity and overt hypocrisy we have reached.

        1. Many have not succumbed though and have accepted their (hopefully temporary) statuses as people without a party. George Will, David Frum, Nicole Wallace, Charlie Sykes, Steve Schmidt, Richard Painter et al. have refused to sell their souls for money or power and ought to be...

I'd have needed way more than 288 characters to list them all. Left off Max Boot, Rick Wilson, Michael Steele, Bill Kristol etc. etc. etc.

Pure Twilight Zone. I picture Rod Seeking somewhere going, "What?! Trump is President??! Aw, hell no, that's too weird even for me!"

This is the hypocrisy of the right. They hold no allegiance to an ideology, they only hold to whatever the strongest member tells them. They have devolved to a party that can be laughed at, ridiculed and given no credibility. They are the party of conspiracy theories,

They are not even serious about governing. They have let the farthest right grab control and drive them further to the craziest depths of the political spectrum where Infowars and Newsmax are considered legitimate and YouTube opinions are valid "facts".

Trump will haunt them for decades, they are going to be fighting for a long time with each other before the rational right win out. The party of Ike needs to come back. Period.

I am a liberal, and also a woman. Sexual assault and child molestation(!) are not liberal vs. conservative issues. I thank you for speaking out so bravely in front of a hostile audience.

Maintaining power and hatred and complete dismissal of anything and anyone “not conservative” are the only Republican directives. They stand for no particular issues.

Even though I am a liberal and do not share your views I am encouraged that you spoke your truth. To have a robust government we need to share our different opinions and not blindly follow when we are given the party line. Good luck in getting reasonable back into the GOP.
