As a black Republican, regardless of your personal feelings of how your party sees you, you'd HAVE to be hyper aware of how everyone outside your party does. There's no way this never crossed his mind.

I think that any logical person already knew this - “Black President let’s get a black guy to lead our party so we don’t come off appearing as bigoted as we’ve become!” The sad thing is that he went along with it.
