"I think that internships should be earned based on merit, and that nepotism is unethical. I am not sure, however, if avoiding nepotism as an applicant would do anything to put a stop to the practice."http://nyti.ms/2ChJGX7

The problem with nepotism is it means people getting positions based on who they know rather than based on merit. This can result in not getting the best person for the job... what company wants that?

It is inherent being a parent to help open doors but ultimately it is up to the individual to make the most of the opportunity. Many have to outperform what is stacked. It's called life.

Ugh. Yeah, I still spend a lot of time and brain space thinking about this, even though I managed to get hired. And all the solutions are so imperfect. But it's a good point about the futility of individual sacrifice.

Internships should be paid otherwise they're only for people able to travel and survive on parents' money for the duration of the internship.

Use your Dad's connections to go to the WH, read PDBs w/o a clearance, and make personal deals on the side with foreign nations. It's the American way. Why have integrity about it? Don't be a sucker. Start early. It's why we oddly have so many lucky white folks in so many jobs!

Being paid to do a job that you are not qualified to do is a completely different thing. If the qualifications are there, then the issue of "keeping it in the family" is redundant.
