These photos of young trainees are as much an American coming-of-age story as they are an examination of patriotismhttp://nyti.ms/2GG4kOJ

Do americans remember a time, when patriotism was NOT militarised? When it was about freedom, not obedience?

This sounds more like the HItlerjugend if any... if u come to me but patriotsm isnt nationalism, thats true but a decent amount see their country above any other country. From that moment it isnt any longer patriotsm but pure nationalism.

This is what terrorists do to their children. Patriotism was hijacked by fascism. #NotNormal

Teaching respect and discipline is good. I prefer to do the teaching myself. I include life lessons on compassion; treating others the way you wish to be treated; equality; the importance of the greater good. Never nationalism. Never.

Really, in order to be a patriot, you need to wear a military uniform!?

When I was a kid, we went to the "armory" to do target practice with National Guard guys as part of our 4-H projects. It was fun. It was NOT military It was about being safe...as in SAFE, with guns and hitting what you were aiming at. You felt privileged to get their respect.
