I, too, stopped straightening my hair when I saw how my black sisters were getting attacked by society, and I haven't felt more free. I wear my curls, frizz, and anything else you want to call it with pride.

Must have been difficult, but I anticipate after a frantic search the Times must have been elated to dig up this little tidbit to stir the pot of division. Maybe just let people wear their hair however they will, and not dwell on societal pressures & cultural appropriations.
