The Trump administration has decided that it needs no new legal authority from Congress to indefinitely keep U.S. military forces deployed in Syria and Iraq, even in territory that's been cleared of ISIS fightershttp://nyti.ms/2HF72p4

I'm not what you'd call a Trump supporter, but to be fair, Congress has shown no interest in amending the AUMF.

That's not true. There was a bipartisan amendment that repealed/modified the AUMF in a previous defense bill, but Paul Ryan removed it unilaterally.

Please clarify? "Bipartisan" doesn't mean that it has the votes to pass the House, and remember that it would also have to pass the Senate as well. From what I gathered, Obama asked for the AUMF to be amended, and Congress didn't have the will to do so. PS: I'm OK being wrong!

...my sense is that Congress is happy to abdicate the constitutional responsibility of declaring war since the public has little stomach for further adventures.

...also, if Congress was really against involvement in Syria, doesn't it have the power of the purse as an ultimate check on presidential power?

61 senators voted against the Rand Paul amendment to scrap the AUMF. Over 80 senators voted to extend it last year. Let's not pretend the Democrats were even trying to be antiwar.

Wasn’t it when Obama pulled troops from Iraq that ISIS took a stronghold of Iraq and Syria causing us to get involved in Syria? The answer is yes. Trump admin has destroyed ISIS and wants to make sure we don’t repeat our mistakes and leave only to let ISIS regroup.

Wasn't Obama following an agreement set into motion by GWB.. Why yes, yes he was. (I'm not saying it wasn't a mistake, but are you suggesting we have a permanent military run state in the middle east?

I’m saying let’s not let history repeat itself . We don’t want troops dying while fighting ISIS for territory they have already fought for. Keep them in place where they now have the advantage . An exit strategy without a long term plan will do more harm than good.

So are you saying that GWB negotiated an exit without a strategy? There was a plan in place. It didn't work. So instead we are leaving the long term plan up to Trumps Discretion. The man failed to have a long term plan to operate a CASINO, and we want to let him unilaterally

Obama had the ability to override and implement his own policy . He was the POTUS for 8 years.

Darn that fact checking. It's not like the US policy is law in the world. It has to be a two sided agreement.http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/may/18/jeb-bush/obama-refused-sign-plan-place-leave-10000-troops-i/ …

Again, The timeline for withdrawing the troops was Set by Bush. By 2011 (3 years, not 8 years into Obama's tenure). Obama didn't have the right to just keep troops there without the agreement of the government there. That would be called an invasion.

When will there be an organized 'exit' from the Republican Party? When will "conservatives" with a conscience begin to end the pretence that fascism is conservatism. #NewParty
