y’all medal count isn’t everything. these athletes work their asses off and are a hell of a lot more talented n strong than us. they worked so hard to get to the Olympics! cheer them on instead of putting them down bc of stupid pieces of metal around their neck.

Wow, if no one can win, what's the purpose of competition. I think top athletes should be able to handle a loss.

Agreed, competition pushes us to better ourselves. My comment on participation trophies was merely a dig the turn our culture has taken to try and shield children from failure.

Wow, I haven't been watching, so I'm surprised Canada has more than the US...should I expect this? I'm not an Olympics fan, so my apologies for the ignorance on this topic. Gotta say, not bad, Canada! 🇨🇦 And, @nytimes...neat to see you using Hangul for 평창! 👍

Winter Olympics is Canada’s forte. US is usually in the top 3 with most medals, but we’ve been getting 4th or 5th places in most events these past two weeks...

Yeah, and #Wada is a financial US affiliate. The #IOC has let control over the operation slip through its fingers, nullifying the #Olympic brand value. It's collective punishment of all Russian athletes. Let's see how long before this medieval method makes it to general courts.

Actually some Russian athletes are allowed to compete - not under Russia - if they subject themselves to stringent drug testing. Hmm and it seems they’re still doping regardless:https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/19/russian-olympics-team-in-shock-over-games-doping-scandal.html …

I am a bit suspecting. It stretches my imagination that all other nations are clean. If so, lap times and other parameters of competition should have been weaker than in recent years with Russia absent. I haven't followed up. For me, the Olympics are no longer of intetest.

People from other countries get caught all the time. Doping is generally a huge issue. I suspect a few more will be caught from other countries as the games go on. Here’s the list for 2016:https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/08/18/sports/olympics/athletes-at-the-rio-olympics-who-were-previously-suspended-for-doping-.html …

....which is why I argue for individual, not collective punishment. Yes, the task of handling the casees individually is more tedious, but it doesn't have this discomforting smell of politicking and vested interest.
