        One of the weirdest things about being the parent of a college-bound kid is understanding that this huge decision is none of my business. I'm lucky my oldest stayed local, but it was not my choice, it was his.

        How about having a truthful conversation with your child about your finances? My family could barely afford a local college, and my dad sat me down and ran the numbers - as a result I hustled to find scholarships and jobs to pay for school. Kids should have a financial stake too.

        You do need to know that larger grants are more available for the disadvantaged student at smaller colleges than state universities as they struggle more with their mix
