President Trump and Republican lawmakers have long tried to steer the national conversation after mass shootings to the mental health of people pulling the triggers, rather than the weapons they usedhttp://nyti.ms/2EwOXaR

Too bad they shot themselves in the foot by revoking a gun law aimed at mental health and gutting healthcare which makes it harder to get coverage and find a doctor. So you keep talking about it but actions speak louder than words and we see where the care is

They really need to stop linking mental illness with violent behaviour. It does nothing to tackle to stigma around mental illness and is incredibly offensive. Lets focus on the real issue...gun laws, gun culture, and gun access.

What about places like Switzerland, Denmark,Finland to name a few with similar gun laws as us? Why dont we see these problems over there? You anti gun folks quick to blame loose gun laws but clearly we have other issues that need addressing when those places dont have these issues

It is not only the "mentally ill" who should be blocked from guns: it is also angry young men with a score to settle. Lets get real. We need real answers. We need leadrship. Not fear of the NRA. Enough.

President Trump and Republican lawmakers need to have their mental health assessed.

Which is extremely ironic since they don't actually seem to care or do much about the lack of mental health care this country has.

False choice: not a question of balancing rights to bear arms and mental health. 2nd amendment clearly states: a “regulated militia....” It does not say everyone has the right to any kind of arms. The media does society an injustice when it capitulates to the far right’s framing.

It doesn’t, that’s why machine guns and cannons are against the law.

The people who want to point to mental illness when this happens are the same people that don't want to pay what it would cost to increase access and affordability for any healthcare, much less mental healthcare.

Both lack of control of firearms & lack of institutional support for mental health are involved. This guy had given lots of behavioral signs (torturing animals, hateful talk, over aggressiveness) that indicated he had problems. After his expulsion of school was there a follow-up?
