At best, Black Panther costumes speak to the enthusiastic embrace of a black superhero. At worst, they could be perceived as an unwitting form of cultural appropriation.http://nyti.ms/2GajThv

Are you freaking kidding me? You have got to be joking! If not then a black child wearing a Spider-Man, or Batman costume is #culturalappropriation #TheNewYorkTimes #isajoke

Black children have spent decades having to dress up in white hero costumes -- Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America....if a white kid chooses to dress up like T'challa for Halloween or cosplay cons, consider it an honor, not an insult.

Black Panther the fictional hero is African, yes, but the hero was created by an American. How about no culture belongs to anyone, there's no such thing as asking permission to join one, and to assume exclusivity is a step backward from an inclusive future. Let the kids be kids.

Culture is apart of one’s identity and to revoke ownership from the people doesn’t seem right. Nothing is wrong with sharing culture though, but someone apart of another culture should not exploit it and call it their own.

Yeah but I wouldn’t call anyone wearing the mask exploitation. Just people trying to enjoy a superhero

Yeah I agree it doesn’t matter who wears the costume, because the culture behind it is already well established, it cannot be exploited. I’m just saying cultural appropriation is a real thing.

"I think the beautiful thing about comics is they do transcend race". Black Panther was respectfully created by two Jews from NYC for all to enjoy. The fact that it has struck a chord with black audiences in an adaptation that celebrates self-determination is awesome.

I think it’s an excuse for people to overreact. We need to move past these sorts of ideas. No one is stealing each other’s culture. This country is a melting pot of cultures. Everyone should be able to live as they see fit as long as they’re not hurting others.

Well, I'd like you to consider the idea that when minority voices talk about cultural appropriation they're not doing it just to be dicks. But I agree with everything after the first sentence, so I don't think we're so far apart maybe.

I definitely have thought about the issue. This country just has so many more pressing things to worry about at the moment. The whole conversation about cultural appropriation just seems trivial to me. I guess we can agree to disagree.

If you mock other cultures, you're a dick. If you love something from another culture, in good faith, it's silly to have a problem with that
