We'll all hem and has about this until it's in your yard. This Texan is tired of indecision based on partisan lobbying. Common sense regulation and mental health funding are our first steps.

People don't realize that the most people that are severely mentally ill don't get real treatment unless they encounter the criminal justice system? Think about it?

And we continually vote for politicians that devalue programs and make policies that keep this needed care out of the hands of the average American that can't afford expensive therapeutic treatment.

Following Dunblane shootings in Scotland, gun control laws tightened resulting in decline of gun ownership and reduction of gun crime across UK.

Further to that in Scotland after an increase in irresponsible behaviour with air rifles you need a licence to own one. Hand find are banned and other gun ownership requires police issued licences and medical certification and strict storage compliance i.e. Locked gun cabinets.

It has worked extremely well in Australia. As a farmer I know that most of my neighbours have a gun each in their houses, but I also know they're damned careful with them.

We have a unique quandary to face as well. One of the key founding principles of this nation is the "right to bear arms". Sadly, this comes with gun violence. We must be careful. It's not as simple removing this right. This is a uniquely American problem.

Surely "right to bear arms" doesn't mean "unfettered right to bear arms"? That is a clearly insane interpretation.

I absolutely agree and I accept limitations like felons being unable to buy weapons, for example. However, I want people who think that we just do away with guns entirely consider the far reaching ramifacations of that rhetoric.

I would limit people who can have weapons, the type of weapons (wrt power, capacity etc), number anyone can have, how they are stored etc. Ban is probably too far fetched an objective. Even in countries like Australia with strong gun control nobody seriously considers 100% ban

Agreed! But I think there is still a problem. Ex. Lets say we limit guns to only shotguns, we will still have gun violence. Some gun control is good, but it will not nix violence, or even the amount of it. The issues driving gun violence is not limited to guns.

Because of the 2nd amendment, we need to be creative, to the extent of employing it more than vilifying it. Maybe the new reality we face is to have armed guards at school and concealed carry permits among teachers and staff. Not saying this is the response. It's not that simple

The problem America has is that it ignores the fact that the right to bear arms is implied to go hand in hand with the presence of a "well regulated militia". It is not - and never has been - prepared for the possession of firearms by untrained civilians

But what is it about US culture that demands the "need" for so many firearms? This is the same for alcoholism and addiction. The tendency is to look at the end result: which is usually a symptom of a problem - and not the problem itself.

It is nothing like alcohol or drug addiction. I know the parallel you were trying to make, but it’s rash and hollow.

I don't believe you understand the parallel I was making. Many want to attribute the symptom as the problem. Social media bullying likely kills more kids than mass shootings. Alcohol and tobacco kill a magnitude greater number of people than opioids. It's whack-a-mole.
