If I found out my spouse was a Trump supporter, I would head down to the court house and apply for an annulment on the grounds of unrevealed mental illness.

Here's an idea: Don't discuss politics with your partner until after voting in the election. Then sit down, have a chat about how you voted, and move on with your lives together. It's worked for me for decades.
-
Being able to say that politics are divorced from your everyday life and not an important aspect of what you look for in a partner is the height of privilege.
-
That isn't what I said. (But even if it was, it isn't even close to the "height of privilige.")
-
But it is a privilege to be so cavalier about your partner’s politics, to discuss after the fact and move on. Elections have consequences.

Is this like an "is your friend is a Nazi" type question?

Hell No. No Trump friendly folks allowed in my house, much less my bed. I would rather be single. FOR SURE. Values Matter

Met my late husband in '74. He was a Vietnam vet, I had been vehemently against the war. Early years a bit tense when we discussed politics. Over time & after many "discussions", he saw I was right about the war, and I learned to honor and cherish our vet's. I miss him.

if politics causes a divorce, you are just a weak individual, differences of opinion are a good thing.

If grown adults cannot discuss politics in person or on twitter without going the name-calling route, it says more about the grown adults than it does about the politics.

Anyone getting divorced over politics must have a lousy sex life to begin with. Also, it demonstrates hubris and an inability to accept other opinions/ideas - and not change them.
-
There are opinions, ideas and politicians that I am not willing to accept. As a woman of color in the Deep South, that is not hubris.

You should of course know what you both believe about politics before getting married.

The current crop of writers are very poor & with hostile tendencies that are actually focused against half the population.
