Oh my god, people are clueless in this post. 5Pointz was a LEGAL art space, that’s considered a museum that existed for years and was a big draw in the middle of LIC. The owner promised the artists that he was going to keep it there. Then they decided that they wanted to...
... build condos in the space. When the artists found out, they organized to make 5Pointz a landmark but the owner decided to be shady and painted over the artwork without notifying anyone. THAT got the owner in trouble. It was pretty sad because some of the work was iconic.
Finally, someone who knows the deal!
I’m now completely confused...a criminal act that’s protected by law and a property owner’s rights voided. Welcome to the land of judicial excess and abuse of power.
There was no criminal act there. 5 Pointz was PERMITTED to run the exterior of the building for well over 10 years.
decision seems odd to me how is a property owner to know in advance if they cannot paint their own building? shouldn't art be protected by VARA in advance so property owner knows what they can/can't do? wouldn't this infringe on the 1st amendment rights of the property owner?
6.7 million...wow. let us all start graffiti.
Let’s have this gets overturned. Otherwise there is little hope for our future.
It won’ and it shouldn’t. The place functioned like an art gallery and the owner made good money off of it over the years. Because it was treated like an art space, it is subjected to the same regulations like you can’t destroy anyone’s artwork because it is your space.
They should take their creativity to art or design school and do something good versus defacing property. The artwork is cool...but really..awarded 6.7 mil?
That was #5Pointz. The landlord permitted 5 Pointz to run the exterior. It gave many kids a place to paint so they wouldn't deface property illegally. I don't think many people know what 5Pointz was really about.
6.7 million for art on some one else’s properties. Shame the military veterans can’t do as well and they protect our rights.
no they don’t
