So true. The U.S. punishes vulnerability as a means of making it easier to manipulate and exploit the vulnerable to maximize profits. When all that matters is profit, no lives matter.

You guys do know a lot of these children are planned. Everyone is 1 affair, 1 illness, 1, argument, 1 job loss away from single parenting.

No, but it is A problem. Not dealing with reality is another problem, as is the fine art of pandering.

So those of us who do not make bad decisions should pay more in taxes to soften the blow for those who do make bad decisions? I don’t think so.

The problem with this opinion piece is you're not addressing an actual argument. People, like myself, who say "Single motherhood leads to poverty", aren't saying single motherhood is the CAUSE of overall poverty. That's idiotic. We're saying that single motherhood leads to...

individuals being poor. You take the standpoint of a collectivist in this article, and it comes off as a little mechanical. Your interest is not in the lives of single mothers who struggle to raise their children in a world that REQUIRES two parents working, but in the effort...

to decrease mere numbers and percentages. In the latter part of your opinion piece where you say "What really differentiates is the penalty attached to single motherhood" is where I start to agree with you. It's not fair to these women and their children that the mother can...

work as hard as she can and still not make it very far in life. However, this is the world we live in, and it would be nice if there was some way the rest of us could help carry her load, but the father of her child/children, if he's alive, needs to be around for his kids.

I’m a single mom of two kids that has always went to private school. I retired from the Army and I have a Masters Degree. I own my house and have two cars. I have never use the government for free handouts. I agree, I’m definitely not the problem.

So your going to tell me that not having a dad in the picture is a good thing. Not having a male and female figure dose not create a balanced lifestyle for children. NYT your opinions are crap

Yes, if the government would just meet every economic and material need of the people, there would be no problem.

-
Funny thing about facts: the author can compare our numbers to those of other countries and examine which programs make a difference. He doesn’t argue for all material needs being met, but looks at specific programs and the impact they make in those countries.

I did a funny thing and actually read the article. You should too. You’ll be pleasantly surprised that he does not blame the dads/men. Don’t worry, the patriarchy isn’t being attacked.
